Az Unicum miatt költöztem Bécsből Olaszországba. Salengo, egy híres olasz alkoholcég tulajdonosa nagyon szerette az Unicumot, ez volt az egyik oka annak, hogy olyan komoly sikereket ért el vele Olaszországban. Más, általa terjesztett italok sokkal híresebbek voltak, jóval nagyobb cégek termékei. Ez esetben tehát egy árucikk személyes szeretete sokkal többet segített, mint a pénz vagy a befolyás.
1970-ben vált általánossá az a divat Olaszországban, hogy az emberek étkezés után gyomorkeserűt igyanak. Akkoriban még csak három-négy ismert gyomorkeserű – amaro – létezett, manapság viszont már ezerháromszáz körüli a számuk. Őrületes a konkurencia. Szinte minden kis városnak megvan a saját amarója. Salengóék körülbelül évi egy millió üveg Unicumot adtak el. Az Unicum ma már kivívta magának azt a rangot Olaszországban, hogy az „ínyencek” ragaszkodnak hozzá.
Amikor először Olaszországba mentem, Genova mellett akartam lakni, hogy közel legyek Salengo irodájához. Találtam egy szép házat Santa Margheritában, körülbelül ötven kilométerre Genovától. Ez a hely a világhírű olasz tengerpart fölött van. A hegy tetején, San Lorenzo della Costában béreltem ki egy öreg villát, mely a tengeröbölre néz. Ott mindig nyár és tavasz van. Imádtam azt a házat, noha eleinte magányos voltam benne.
Minden reggel bementem az irodába, Genovába. Salengo ügynökeivel módszeresen végigutaztam Olaszországot, mint az Unicum „goodwill ambassador”-ja. Elsősorban az Unicum reputációját építgettem, vagyis mai kifejezéssel: a public relations volt a feladatom. Még most is szoros szálak fűznek ahhoz a céghez, bár Salengo már meghalt.
Csodálatos volt az élet abban a házban. Később Firenzébe, Toscanába költöztünk. Anne, a második feleségem is imádta Toscanát, mint az angolok általában. Rengeteg angol települt le arrafelé. Toscana egyébként Európa egyik legnagyobb bortermelő vidéke. A toscanaiak híresek a cinizmusukról, a csípős nyelvükről és a karakánságukról. Elmondok egy példát. Volt nekünk egy nagy asztalunk, ami megtetszett Emilio Puccinak, a híres divattervezőnek, mikor egyszer nálunk ebédelt. Mindkét feleségem rajong a Pucci-modellekért. A Pucci család története az 1400-as évekig nyúlik vissza, a toscanai arisztokrácia kiemelkedő tagjai. Elég az hozzá, hogy Pucci kérte, hívja fel őt az iparos, aki az asztalt csinálta, mert ő is szeretne egyet. Az asztalos felhívta, de nem tudott vele beszélni, csak a titkárával. Az asztalos azt mondta, ha nem beszélhet személyesen Puccival, akkor nem csinál asztalt. És nem is csinálta meg. Hát ilyenek a toscanaiak.
Később az Unicum Gyár Solaróba települt, Milánó mellé. Akkoriban nekem eszembe se jutott, hogy visszajöjjek Magyarországra. Olaszországot második hazámnak tekintem, de az alapértékeimet mégis inkább Amerika alakította ki. Hálás vagyok mind a két országnak.
Toscana és Olaszország híres bora a Chianti Classico. A Consorcio Gallo Nero szövetkezett forgalmazza és reklámozza. Lapo Mazzei, aki ennek a szövetkezetnek és egy olasz banknak, a firenzei Cassa di Risparmiónak az elnöke, engem kért fel, hogy foglalkozzam a borok reklámjával és public relationsével világszerte. El is vállaltam, és két évig csináltam. Közben vasárnap rendszeresen jártam a Fiorentina focicsapat meccseire. Ha ottmaradok, beválasztottak volna az elnökségbe. A Fiorentina elnöke megkért, hogy érdeklődjem egy magyar focista felől, de ez az elnök lezuhant egy repülővel, úgyhogy a dolog ennyiben maradt.
Ekkoriban ismerkedtem meg az Underberg családdal. Rheinbergben van a gyáruk, melynek most Emil Underberg és csodálatos felesége, Christiane Underberg a tulajdonosa. Ők a világ legnagyobb italgyártói és terjesztői közé tartoznak.
Az Underberg cég megvásárolta az osztrák Gürtler céget, mely egy ideig a magyar Monimpexen keresztül vásárolt barackpálinkát. 1985-től az Underberg céggel közösen magyar barackpálinkát importáltunk Ausztriába, amelyet ott palackoztak.
Közben egész idő alatt összesen kétszer jártam Magyarországon. A hetvenes években Belgrádban kértem egy vízumot, és kaptam is, két napos átutazásra jogosítót. Először elmentem Derekegyházára, ahol a kastély volt, ma szeretetotthon, aztán fölutaztam Pestre a gyárhoz. Hatalmas vörös csillagot raktak a homlokzatára, gyorsan tovább hajtottam, föl a Várba, a házunkhoz, melyben ma is a török követség működik. A gimnáziumot is megnéztem, azon is hatalmas vörös csillagot láttam. Egyetlen napot maradtam Magyarországon, aztán elmenekültem. Még egyszer jöttem haza, később, az amerikai gyerekeimmel, hogy megmutassam nekik, hogy mit úsztak meg. A nyolcvanas évek legvégéig többé eszembe se jutott, hogy hazatérjek.

I moved to Italy from Vienna because of Unicum. Salengo, the owner of a famous alcohol company, really liked Unicum, that was one of the reasons he accomplished so much with it in Italy.His other drinks he was distributing as well were way more famous than Unicum. In this case the passion for the liquer was much more important than the money or the influence.
It became a tradition in Italy in the 70’s that people consumed bitters after heavy meals. There were only a few known bitters back then – called amaro- but this number has increased to around 1300. The competition is insane. Almost every small town has it’s own amaro. Salengo sold approximately 1 million bottles of Unicum yearly. Unicum has managed to grow it’s fame to be counted as a luxury liquer among the people in Italy.
When I first moved to Italy, I wanted to live next to Genova, to be as close to Salengo’s office as possible. I found a nice house in Santa Margherita approximately 50 kilometers away from Genova. This place is adjacent to the well known Italian beach. I rented an old mansion on the top of the mountain in San Lorenzo della Costa, that overlooked the bay. There is a non stopping circle of summer and spring there. I loved that house, although I was quite lonely at the beginning.
Everyday I went to the office in Genova. I travelled accross Italy with Salengo’s agents numeruos times and tried to convience them about the reputation of Unicum. Today you would call it a public relation. I still have a tight connection with that company, although Salengo has deceased since then.
The life was wonderful in that house. Later we moved to Toscana with my second wife Anne, who really fancied Toscana as Brittish people usually do. A lot of Brittish people settled down there. Toscana is one of Europe’s biggest wine region. The toscanian people are famous of their cynicism,honsety and firmness. Let me give you an example. We had a really huge table, that Emilio Pucci the famous fashion designer immediately really took a liking to when we were having a lunch with him. Both of my wives are big fan of the Pucci-models. The Pucci family history goes back to the 1400, they were eminent member of the aristocrats of Toscana. Anyway back to the story. Pucci asked me who built this table because he wanted one for himself as well. Unfortunately when the craftsman were trying to contact him he was not able to reach out to him personally, he was only able to talk with Pucci’s secretary.The craftsman stated that if he is not able to talk with Pucci he will not build the table. and so he did not. That’s how the Toscanians are.
Later on the Unicum factory relocated in Solaro, next to Milan. Back then it never occured to me once to move back to Hungary. I always viewed Italy as my second home, but the times that I spent in the United States really formed my personality. I am grateful for both of the countries.
Toscana’s famous wine is Chianti Classico. It was distributed by the Consorcio Gallo Nero association.The chairman of this company and an Italian bank the Cassa di Risparmio, Lapo Mazzei has asked me to work on these wines and their public relation throughout the world. I accepted the request and worked with the wines for 2 years. During this time I attended the football matches of the Fiorentin every Sunday. If I had stayed there they would have chosen me to be a member of the board of directors. The chairman of Fiorentin reached out to me to ask about a hungarian football player for him, but unfortunately his plane crashed during one of his travel so the deal never happened.
In this time I have met the Underberg family. Their factory is in Rheinberg, which is currently led by Emil Underberg and his wonderful wife Christiane Underberg. They are one of the world’s biggest alcoholic drink producers and distributors.
The Underberg company has purchased the austrian Gürtler company, which was importing apricot brandy through the hungarian Monimpex. From 1985 with the cooperation of the Underberg company we were importing apricot brandy to Austria.
This whole time I have only been in Hungary twice. In the 70’s I asked for a visa to Belgrade which I was granted and was able to stay there for 2 days. Firstly I went to Derekegyház, to see the castle then I travelled to Pest to see the factory. They attached a huge red star to the top of the building. I immediately drove to our house, which is in Buda castle and where the Turkish ambassady is located even to this day. I also went to the secondary school which I attended, it also had the big red star on it. I only stayed 1 day in Hungary then I left. I only returned one more time with my children who were born in the United States to show them, how things could have ended up if I stayed in Hungary. To the very end of the 80’s it never occured to me once to ever return home again.
